D4 Alpine Double Portaledge

The expedition-proven A5 Alpine Double portaledge at 42" x 75" was the first truly stormproof  portaledge, designed and built by A5 Adventures from 1987-1999. John Middendorf and Xaver Bongard used this size for their ascent of Great Trango Tower in 1992.  When BD "acquired" the A5 designs, they retained the A5 Single and the A5 Cliff Cabana, but dropped the useful A5 Alpine Double size.  Later, in consultation with John, Luke at Runout Customs re-created the A5 Alpine Double design and began manufacturing the proven light and compact A5 design under his own brand. in 2019 John and Luke  again collaborated to produce a limited batch of the D4 Alpine Double, with the D4 curved tube corners, super rigid and light hybrid-diameter D4 frame, and D4’s  patent pending “D4 Bullet Joiners”.

Over the years, John Middendorf has helped dozens if not hundreds of people make their own portaledges, based on decades of effort designing and manufacturing portaledges.  This tradition continues.

The D4 Alpine Double (75" x 42.5") portaledge was produced by Runout Customs in 2019; 65 D4 Alpine Doubles were built.
