Also Munge, You had a thread somewhere, I forget where, looking for patterns in photos.
I have spent the last year and a half compiling photos of that topic from around the west,
I just cannot find the thread. Do you remember it?

It's for this reason I don't size my my shoes screaming tight, there are a lot of ugly looking
feet around the base of most sport crags.

Curious.. what kind of patterns?

Well Kevin went and posted a pic of my fat a$$, so I guess I should post one showing his skinny butt cleaning a roof we set o route on last Sunday:

Notice the splint on his left hand... I'll post the mummy-like tape flapping in the wind "after" shot when I find my sync cord.

Reminds me of that Monty Python bit with the basketcase yelling at the guy to come back...

Every photo has a story..

You may notice an absence of gear above me. Somehow...  Brenden the Scotsman (not normally known for their great stature)  managed
to top-step and place the next piece so high that I was just barely able to clip it. It wasn't due to a lack of reach on my part (4.5" ape index),
rather the 2 workable fingers protruding from my splinted hand weren't enough to hold myself with while leaning back and stretching waaaay
out there. A couple of gimpy looking sort of dnyos and I finally got it. This photo is somewhat deceiving. though..
It was actually overhanging.

Here's one looking up from the belay,  (sorry Brenden, another butt shot)
Just below where Brenden is thrashing and dangling, You can see the the gap between pieces where  I was trying to clip.

BTW skully, sweet shot of Asgard.

 (sorry Brenden, another butt shot)

Lies! All lies!  With all the photos you took, I know you have one that shows the reach and is NOT a butt shot.

That a serious Biner/Bolt-Hanger ratio you have going there.
Title: Re: Weekly Favorite Big Wall Pics Thread
Post by: skully on May 22, 2009, 04:12:03 pm
Gettin' close to maxxed out....Well, maybe you could get 1 more biner through.......maybe.
Oh, BTW....pretty good thrashing & dangling. WAY easier to watch than to perform. ;-)

Looks sweet, goatboy. Wish I could pony up for a trip like that. Either one, actually.

You'll need a chisel and/or punch to effectively place heads with that nice hammer. You can always tell when people haven't--what a mess. I'll bet ya the A5 "overhanging man" graphic has spawned more scars around head placements than any single image in existence. Words to live by from Fish: Remember, you are a surgeon, not some goon just haphazzardly hitting away on a blob of copper 2000 feet in the sky.

Nah, that 5.8 was looking pretty wet with all the storming activity that weekend.  We were skeered.

the bags up there were from somone elses efforts. possibly a free effort. I'm not allowed to speak of such things in mixed company though. :)

we ended up getting drunk on the Glenn Morangie that Uber brought after drying out for a spell.

same trip as this shot...

Due to zero camping availability a few years ago, my son and I hung our Metolius ledge under an overhang
on the water-side of Malamute where we lived for a little over a week. Throw in a little BC forest fire smoke,
and the evening sunsets over the ocean, had us convinced that we had the best seats in the house!

not exactly bigwallish, but i did use a hook as a back up on the first bolt placement. weakmo, for sure, but it felt good to get something done. 180' ish. Pretty easy though. FA Munge and Dave W.

Bouldering is big wall training for those two moves before most belays; best done on low angle problems with no holds while wearing a backpack.

Top of three when we blasted on Friday. See the sunshine on the deck. It was pleasant and warm, sunny, but not too hot. Not bad for January, Huh?

This was supposed to be my lead, and I pawned it off on Cameron. Yes, that is his first piece. Plum over my head, and about 40 foot out there. Not too bad, except the lobes were almost all out on the 5". The 6" was in the anchor I was on. I do recall him saying something about "puking" a couple minutes later too.

   Enjoy

     Bob

I think that photo offset posted of the Nipple is me! haha!  I think thats me on the Zod with my girlfriend, could be mistaken though!

I think the guy hauling TF is Bob, I was just to the right of him by 100ft doing the traverse pitches from TF over to WOEML, finishing up New Dawn.  That was two weekends ago.  Last weekend I was on the Shield, Jerry Miller got this amazing shots of us on the headwall!

Dave,

Photoshop does it real well. In fact, you can take a grid of shots and Photoshop will figure out which photo goes where!
Before I left Yosemite, I took six horizontal photos of Zenyatta Monatta from bottom to top. At home I stitched them together in Photoshop. Now, I have a highly detailed, high rez photo of the route. I enlarged it (it's very sharp), looked at all the photos I could find of the route and drew the line and anchors exactly where they are in real life. I have a Epson 7600 wide format printer that can print 24" wide by 100 feet long so I now have a photo of the route, 2 feet x 6 feet hanging on the wall in my home office.

Check out this one I did of Grape Race/Tribal Rite.

http://w3.gorge.net/mhudon/El%20cap%20solo.html (http://w3.gorge.net/mhudon/El%20cap%20solo.html)

I'll gladly print up my Pano of ZM for you. $60 not including shipping. I do large prints for local photographers and for myself when I was taking landscape photos and selling my work.

Tom's photos are really good to do this with since he doesn't move significantly.

Most of my more recent pics are on the other lap top waiting to be recovered, but here's a couple older ones to keep the stoke up for spring:
(Some Aid, some Free, mostly FA's)

I was very much hungover in this shot.

Drilling some of the permanent anchors on another route.

Last October, this was the last route to be filled in at that single pitch crag (I know it's not "BIG"wall, but it has a hook).  LichenTRADition 5.8 R - no bolts, no pins, R becomes X if you don't have hooks.

Almost forgot, Tip of the Day:
Do not spill your pint of Traditional Ale on your lap top.
(though the new lap top has proven to be infinitely more skookum)

have found myself irked when folks refer to El Capitan in casual ways like saying 'chunk' of granite (probably just projecting my own weakness), but the term that comes to mind is always "Monolith" or "monolithic" because it connotes what you see in that pic. a huge single epic piece of stone.

The bugger about that place is the weather.  That photo was taken July 4th, and the snow fields really aren't that big by then.  Depending on snow fall and how warm the summer is, that's about the earliest you want to head out there.  But then depending on the summer, the rainy season starts about July 15th.  In three trips out there I've only once managed to hike within a mile of the base, until our youngest son slipped on a rock and almost pierced his nose with an alder.  I think next summer we'll hit the other bay, something be said for a 5 min approach vs. a 5mi approach with no established trail.  Still, the base of that dome has some amazing looking features which unfortunately don't show in that pic.

The upside is the mouth of the bay is a great place to catch these guys:

Can't one of the Big Wall Forum big wigs set it up so that we can upload photos from our desktops to display in posts?

This is probably way late and you probably already figured it out, but http://www.bigwalls.com/forum2/gallery/index.php (http://www.bigwalls.com/forum2/gallery/index.php) can take uploads of pics.

Been laid up with a busted ankle for the last 6 months. Thought it was sprained at first, but now looks like its broken. So bang goes my planned fishers trip. Now looking forward to getting back on El Cap next year. Here are some of my favourites from last year

I'm short, skinny, and often scared and there was NOWHERE on that route that iron was even preferable to clean gear, let alone necessary.

This is the pitch where the AO joins Iron Hawk. It was an awesome pitch for me since it was a big change for the ever expanding flakes of the AO. The rock was bedrock solid, clean and sharp.

Hi Mark-

It has to do with the new forum version I set up a few weeks ago--the old version you couldn't post pictures, so all the pictures before had to be linked to an external url.  Now you can just upload pics directly to the forum (that was my main reason for wanting to upgrade--so we can post pics easier).  cheers!
