Popped my cherry!
« on: November 08, 2010, 10:14:41 am »
Finally! After getting the bug in the spring, and trying the SFWC twice, and approaching one more time, I finally summited a grade V. Here is the progression of my short wall career so far.

The pirate, idyllwild CA (a few laps of leading and jugging)
PO Wall P1 only
Well i think i got this down, lets roll!!!!

The first attempt was experimental. SFWC I was taken by a columbian and a german, and as a party of three, we slowly crawled part of it. Dinner ledge made, and part of 4 fixed (to the short anchors) on day one. Day two finished lead to proper P4 anchors, cleaned 4, and went to 5.  All three of us at the P5 anchors, shit is clustered and a bit intimidated so we decide to retreat.

A few weeks later, one of my regular partners (RS) and I head up to the SFWC again.  Move a bit quicker this time, finish the KOR roof and decide to bail. Moving too slow and parties ahead of us.

Fast forward to this fall, and I my bring the secret weapon. I call him my mentor, but he doesn't like that and says we are just partners.  This guy is twice my age and hard to kill. Basic old guy badass.  We get to the base and there are 5 parties on the wall, 3 at dinner, one at the top of P1, and one at the base. We say fuck it and go free climbing.  This is in mid september so I think i am going to have to wait all winter stewing in failure.

Well the weather gods smiled on me and gave me a great window last week. 70's and sunny in the valley. I go with my regular partner (RS) and we decide on the WFLT. The column has not been good to me, so we decide to try something else. Good choice! Awesome route, super steep. Linked all the pitches and has a bonus bivy a the summit before the 4th class. My hands are still swollen, but the smile on my face will last me until next spring.

WAHOO!!!!!

Yep im hooked! Another Grade V should be good, maybe back to the column to try and finish off the south face, or southrn man may be an option. OR upgrade to RNWFHD or Lurking Fear on El Cap. One thing  is for sure, I need to get faster leading!

Congrats Pie,

I actually think you made the right choice in doing the WFLT instead of the SFWC. Better route IMO. If you want to do something on the column next then maybe do the Prow. The SFWC just gets so crowded at times that it can really take away from the experience. Once you get a little more speed up it can be a fun route to do in a push. Big Wall is where its at man glad you had a good time.

Wow Pie I thought you weren't gonna tell anyone I did that to you!

JK man way to go. Nothing like going up the first time, and it only gets better.  As the walls get bigger, just remember only think about what is in front of you. Thinking too much gets you in a lot of trouble, and the top will come just takes time.

Nice Pie!

Way to stick with the mojo and take it down!  Man, you will never forget (and will always try and achieve) that feeling at the top out!

Pics are mandatory.

Nice PIE. I was pleased to meet you in May, nice to see the obsesion rules over common sense. So glad you got up the bigger stone. Lots of work, lots of trips, and now you made it. I will forward a link of this to the German, and maybe even the Colombians. They will get a stoke from it too.
