What have you dropped on a big wall?
« on: March 28, 2011, 11:30:46 am »
Me:

Set of nuts and a ring angle claw hook on Tangerine Trip, found the nuts.

Mideast Crisis, surprisingly nothing on 2 trips, but one partner dropped a small pulley and one of my ascenders.

Prow:  My Chouinard butt bag.

Leaning Tower:  A stupid fixed line that wrapped around our bag on Pitch 3+4.  I think i dropped a hook the first time up, but not sure on that.

I'm sure I've forgotten a bunch.  Other slander?

I dropped my bag of extra hooks off of Tribal Rite last year. Luckily, the cavers were hanging on the ropes right then and others were at the bottom of their rope. I asked them to give the bag to Tom. They did so I got them back. Luckily it was my extra set.

Lurking Fear: Pitch 3/4?- Buddy (to remain nameless) drops a good chunk of a double set of HB brassies.  Pledges to replace them.  We climb on.
Pitch 9:  At the bivy in the AM.  My buddy mis-clipped the biner which the poop tube and ledge bag were clipped into.  Not even gonna think about flagging my ledge on that route, and there were two freshies in the tube which no doubt created a huge mess near the base, so we left our bag and rapped down.  Found the ledge bag, and a surprising number of the brassies, and of course, a nasty mess that he got to clean up before the next party showed up and kicked our asses.  He was less than stoked.

The best story about dropped gear I have is the single rack we found hanging 15 ft up in a tree near the Alcove Slab.  Thought we had scored the jackpot, but turned out it belonged to some Chilean buddies of ours that had dropped it off the 28th pitch of the NOSE!  How it ended up in that tree, that far over I am not sure.  They were pretty happy when we strolled over and laid it down on their table.

I dropped a screamer, a angle and my Yates belay seat on 10 days after.

I think Pete takes the cake when he dropped his partners pig on Scorched Earth! That had to suck!

My glasses from the Stovelegs pitches. Good thing I'm near sighted. The climb continued. The Valley floor was fuzzy.

Edit: Lasik will prevent me from repeating that mistake.

Yup, I've lost 2 pair of glasses off the Wall. 1 was from Camp6 (they're still out there someplace). The other was from my big Mescalito fall. Some folks saw them fall & went & fetched them for me. 1 lens busted, but I could see!
I lost my camera card & a spoon Summer before last in the Sawtooths.

In the spring of '77 I was hauling to Mammoth on the Magic Mushroom. We a party of three and it was raining/snowing right then. The third guy needed to get around the haul bags so I stopped. For some reason we unclipped the bags but they were only sitting, end to end, on top of each other. All of a sudden they took off, luckily I had gloves on so I grabbed the ropes on either side of the pulley. I vividly remember the water squirting out of the rope and my gloved hands. The second guy, cleaning the pitch, looked up and saw the bags rocketing towards him. "Oh shit and Oh well" was all he had time to think before he hunkered down and the bags stopped inches above him. The bags had gone about 30 or 40 feet.

I dropped a figure eight on the Nose in 1987.

Hope you guys are all doing well.  Getting psyched for another visit to Yosemite this year.

I posted on this topic at work yesterday. Right after, I had to climb and while I was up on a truss I dropped my figure eight...

No more talking about dropping shit at work!

I dropped a pair of sunglasses on p5 Skull Queen. After rapping The South Face to the base some nice fella had found them and offered them back to me. I took those same glasses on Ten Days After months later and dropped them right after Zac dropped his belay seat. Never found those again.
It's a tribal thing
