TR soloing upper RNWF of HD
« on: April 28, 2011, 11:21:30 am »
Hey gang!

I was wondering if anyone has tried toprope soloing any of the pitches above Big Sandy on Half Dome. I'm looking to try the zigzags and that 11d(ish) slab just past Thank God Ledge. I haven't tried TR soloing anything substantial like this. I'm confident with systems but don't remember where I could anchor. I have 3 60m static lines for use.

The slab has to be easy enough to rig - I remember ledges just below the summit, so my anchor should be away from any curious tourists.

But the zigzags... does that require running a rope over the visor? Should I bring rope protectors for the edge? And even so, is it a pain (or impossible) to swing into the wall? After I climb the zigzags, do I need to jug hundreds of free-hanging feet to get back up?

As always, the youngins appreciate any advice from you old farts :)

Here's a photo looking up from Big Sandy. It looks like you could just tie your rope off to that spike!

Say no to limbers, excavators and retro-bolters. No matter how much he smiles.

Seems like an awfully long way to go to TR something. Maybe I don't get it. I dunno.

If you're going to go through all that effort, you might as well pack a bag and sleep down on Big Sandy. It'll be pretty funny to fall off the Zig-Zags and take whatever swing you get.

Personally, I don't see that it's worth that much effort, but hey, crazy stuff is what colors life.

I want to do it fast (half dome/nose linkup) and I would also like to try to free the whole thing at some point.
