Portaledge on Ebay. Good deal?
« on: February 17, 2012, 10:53:38 am »
There's a Pika single ledge on Ebay right now with a "buy it now" price of $220.00.  Should I snap that up, or wait?  I've been buying a lot of gear lately but my wife has been cool with it because I'm finding good deals and we got a big tax return.

I'd go for a double. Two singles with their flys weigh far more than one double. Additionally, they take much more monkeying around to get set up on most anchors.

Pika ledges are just ok. Not a huge screamin deal. But it'll get ya up a wall so if that's all you can afford...

Hmm I guess I'll have to think about it more.  It sounds like this would do the trick and is a ok-ish deal.  A lot of my gear, frankly, falls into the "just ok" category and I've always been satisfied enough with it.  Besides, any walls I may do seem like they are going to end up being solo so this might end up being what I need.  "Good enough" to get me up a wall doesn't sound too bad to me because I haven't yet proven I'm more than just a dreamer.

So you're going to take the trip of a lifetime but you're going to book the economy room?

Keep watching ebay, you will score a single fish or A5 for around $250.

Doubles usually go for around $400 and up unless they are withot fly.

If you are going to get a double, the fish is a pretty tight fit for 2 normal size dudes, WAY cozy.

The A5 double, not the alpine double is the perfect size IMO.

BD is a monster, and metolious is $$ on the used market due to bomberness.

I fly a single A5 & don't plan on changing anytime soon. I got mine on Ebay for 199. Shipping was like 35 bucks.
Still a bargain.

Copy that on the Bdel cabana, that thing is like hauling a motor home up the wall. I got one and plan on using it when I climb with my girlfriend, or a partner big enough to carry it for me. Going from a fish double to a Bdel cabana was like goldfish to orcas

I do miss my old A5 double....Cheetah got that one(from me). Both of us scored some good mileage on that ledge.
It wasn't an Ebay deal. PreEbay. It was a BroDeal.

There supposedly used to be an issue with the fit of the fly over the ledge - something to the effect that the fly wasn't measured to fit while there was actually someone in the ledge (according to a post in the big wall FAQ of the now defunct Tradgirl website). Maybe that problem was resolved. If not, maybe it should be a fair-weather-only ledge. The price is certainly tempting, but it seems like you could do better in terms of a result.

You guys successfully talked me out of it by the time my wife got home from work but the clincher was when she said "If you get a single how am I going to come along as your second?"  We're probably going to be taking a trip down to Sevierville, TN this summer for non-climbing reasons.  I suggested we try preparing for a go at Glass Menagerie while we're down there since it's only about two hours away from Sevierville.  Portaledge not required, but it would be awfully fun to have one and get to experience wall life on a smaller scale.  I'll keep shopping the sales.

I build my ledge from scratch. At the time I had no funding and built it for about $100 in materials. Granted if you count the time for R&D and production I probably have close to $500 in it, but my time is free to me and it made a good winter project. My ledge is still going strong, though I have recently upgraded the frame. I also have purchased a BD single fly and it fits very nicely. I have always contemplated buying a ledge, but mine only sees about 10-12 nights a year. Usually in places where I can flag it so I'm only setting it up once. I just can't justify the expense for new, with so many other priorities on the wish list. (If it ain't broke, don't fix it mentality)

I'll just say that for now, I'm happy with my set up and plan to stick with it.
I don't think it's gonna hold....BUT WE'RE GONNA USE IT ANYWAY!

For whatever reason my work computer won't allow me to post the pics that I have. Gotta wait till I get my laptop back from I.T.

I have a single  Pika portaledge  bed I would part with for cash or trade.  I was going to build a portaledge but decided I did not need a second ledge.
