Christopher's Tower - Sedona
« on: April 20, 2012, 10:24:27 pm »
Posted something similar up at Supertopo as well but it got buried with no response. I'm trying to find some more info on Christopher's Tower, just south of Slide Rock State Park in Oak Creek Canyon. Planning on driving down there to check out the canyon I'm pretty sure the tower is located in tomorrow but was hoping someone might have additional beta. The only description I've been able to find so far is in AAJ Vol. 38:

ARIZONA
Oak Creek Canyon, Christopher's Tower and Lucifer's Tooth. On January 13, Dan Stih and I climbed a freestanding tower in Oak Creek Canyon, just north of Sedona, Arizona. The line involved two mostly aid pitches on a steep compact face following corners and good splitter cracks. We feel it is the best clmibing we have done in the Sedona area. We named the formation Christopher's Tower (III 5.8 A2 C2) after my late friend Chris Clark who fixed the first pitch but was killed climbing in the Sierras before he could return to finish the tower.
... Both towers are located in a canyon just south of Slide Rock State Park.

I think I've heard a mutter or two, around. I've no direct knowledge, though, sorry.
Sounds pretty fun. Those Sedona Towers are frickin' cool. 5.8 A2 C2 sounds awkward.
Hey, it's  a good excuse for a recon hike, anyway. Who knows, you could find somethin' else cool nearby, & hit them both.
Good fortune to you.

Found 2 towers off the Sterling Pass trail, about a mile from 89a. Need to go back and figure out what's what.

is this a Crusher (Bartlett) area?

Also, Erik Wolfe climbs the AZ and may know history...
