Two in Zion
« on: April 30, 2007, 08:19:58 pm »
So my Bro called me and was heading through Southern Utah and had a week to spare. Luckily I had the next four days off, so the plan quickly developed to meeting up in zion to get in some wall climbing. After a speeding ticket on my way out of tahoe, I made it there late at night. Before I left I checked the NPS site and it looked like Angel's landing had just been reopened for the season to climbing. Checking in at the visitor center, the site was true. So we booked Prodigal Son to ward of other potential parties for the next day. The plan was to climb it in a push. We decided to do it in 4 blocks, this would break it up a bit and make it a pretty casual experience vs going for all out speed.

the ever important self portrait after my first block

looking over at some guys we met earlier that where up on Lunar X

looking down at my bro after finishing my second block, whew only a few more pitches to go..

the top is in sight!

So we toped out before dark. This was My first time completing a push without using a headlamp. We made it just barely. So we were stoked and ran down the trail to catch the shuttle out and grab a beer.

The next day was a rest day, and a forced one for all the other climbers. Thunder and lightning moved in and dumped rain for the the afternoon. We took a shuttle ride in to scope the other groups. lots of people coming of the moonlight buttress area.

Another shot after the storm

There was a party that was close to toping out on Spaceshot after about 2 nights on the wall. nobody else was fixed, so we figured this would be the next objective. Once again back to the VC to book a permit to ward off others. In the morning on the first shuttle in, the shuttle had two hikers on it and the rest was full of all the wall climbers that came down the day before. It was a pretty fun ride, we all got to talk about our routes and wish each other luck. I think it made it quite the experience for those hikers, getting to here us all laugh about runouts and bad gear. Once in the upper canyon, the shuttle driver started calling roll call for our prospective routes and droped each group off closest to their start. What a great park and park employees, that sort of thing would never fly in the ditch!

So we were last off and finally back to the grind. Same plan on Spaceshot, 4 blocks. This would give us each 2 of the headwall pitches.

Heres looking down at my bro after the 2nd block.

looking over at the raps/descent of the party that toped out late the night before.

what a beutiful location

We topped out in the afternoon and were able to get down in time for afternoon beers during the gear sort and time to grub at the bit and spur.

My brother enjoying a summit Redbull before running over to the raps.

All in all it was a great quick trip with some really good climbing. It felt really good to get some air under my feet.
Heading down to the raps the sun was hitting the wall like it was a sign... I think we were being told what this falls objective is.....

I'm jealous since I only have a worthless sister! :p

Looks fun though; good work.
