Fish hooks (orginal unused - large photo warning)
« on: February 10, 2009, 11:03:47 am »
I've just scored a couple of Fish hooks that have never been used before .... been looking for them for years...

I paid 19 each, which was the orginal price. Sweet deal...

Anyone used these before, are they as good as people say?

the most bomber hook when used as "pro." good for hooking flakes. not so good for little micro features, not stable enough, not really designed for that purpose.

I've got plenty of other hooks, but other than a 2 inch fish ring claw hook, I've been looking for these for many years...

Anyone want to buy a 2 inch fish ring claw hook. I think I paid 20 bucks for it from Russ. Unused. Offers?

The custom bent 2.5" ring angle hook is where it's at, a better compliment to the grappling hook than the 2" Fish hook, or 2" ring angle hook.  But sadly,  I dropped mine...

I gave mine to a friend who claimed to be getting into wall climbing at the time. I'm sure they haven't been used in ten years and probably never will.
Say no to limbers, excavators and retro-bolters. No matter how much he smiles.

The two fish hooks I have are 2" and 3".

I didn't know that Russ sold the ring angle hook at 2.5 inch. I'll sell my 2 inch on Ebay and maybe get a 2.5... Not sure when I'm going to use it though...

Email him, when I asked for mine a year and a half back he said it was no big deal to bend the ring angles to 2.5 or 3", I went for 2.5".  Like a lot fo good gear, once it was in my hand, lots of placements became obvious.  When all you have is a BIG F'ing hook, everything looks like a pig waiting to be stuck.

Pud Question:

What kinda of feature are you going to be hooking with that?  Big flake type stuff (not the smaller edges like Mr said)?

Pud Question #2:

(Obviously this depends a bit, but...)  What hooks do you 'normally' carry with you on a pitch? 1 or 2?  A smattering of types and sizes? Or only if you know the pitch requires hooking?

I usually carry one set of hooks in my Fish beef bag, since you never know.  Depending on what the topo says or what the pitch looks like I might bring the second set of hooks in another beef bag, or just grab extra cam hooks and the second cliffhanger.

Big hook not only works well on flakes, but on goofy spots, like the nook of a erratic corner crack, grabbing a divit in the back of a ledge, you name it.  One of those things that finds it's uses.  Big hooks are just less scary to whip out than smaller ones, and going free from a hook placement eliminates the problem of unclipping your aiders down at your ankles while still on tenuous free holds.
