have found myself irked when folks refer to El Capitan in casual ways like saying 'chunk' of granite (probably just projecting my own weakness), but the term that comes to mind is always "Monolith" or "monolithic" because it connotes what you see in that pic. a huge single epic piece of stone.

Better have 20+ Blue Hawks for this one.

Mr. - A1 beaks means they caught a good winger right?  HAHAHAH!

Those BD beak cables are more like A1+ :-)

The bugger about that place is the weather.  That photo was taken July 4th, and the snow fields really aren't that big by then.  Depending on snow fall and how warm the summer is, that's about the earliest you want to head out there.  But then depending on the summer, the rainy season starts about July 15th.  In three trips out there I've only once managed to hike within a mile of the base, until our youngest son slipped on a rock and almost pierced his nose with an alder.  I think next summer we'll hit the other bay, something be said for a 5 min approach vs. a 5mi approach with no established trail.  Still, the base of that dome has some amazing looking features which unfortunately don't show in that pic.

The upside is the mouth of the bay is a great place to catch these guys:
