Later Realizations

It's amazing what a guy can do when he just doesn't know what's above.
In '97, my bro Phil  & I went to Sequoia, intent on doin' an FA on Angel Wings, which we eventually did.
As a warm up to Sequoia big Wall climbing, we climbed "All Along the WatchTower", on a rock of the same name. Our topo called it 5.9A3. We slept 3 nights on it. It's a cool wall in a cool Valley, but it faces North. Chilly. Awesome nailing, scary free climbing, full value.
I told Largo, who did the FA, about it & he said they originally called it A5, but put a bolt(which we were lovin', at the time)in the pitch, & went on.
Ya stick heads between crystal edges, & there's weird hooks & stuff, way sketchy. We had no idea, just guessed. I'd still call it A4(what does New Wave A3+ mean, anyway?), fall potential high. Phil led that pitch....He's pretty McGuyverie( does that work?)
Just worked it.There was some cussin'... He fell a couple times, on this SAD lost arrow. It Stuck, he got back up & led on. Pretty damn solid, I'd say.
I hear he lives near Index, these days.

Good times, skully.

I shudder to think how hard we'd be climbing with no ratings.

Love to hear more about the Angel Wings. Looks like a destination...
Say no to limbers, excavators and retro-bolters. No matter how much he smiles.

The weirdest thing happened in camp, during the Demobe.....We're tossin' gear & these 3 Rangers come into camp from different directions.
We tensed up & prepared, well, for tooling. They asked,"were you the guys on the WatchTower?" Which we responded to in the affirmative.
They were JAZZED! They were sayin' "Wow, that's so cool! Can you show us some stuff?" Really weird scene, for a Valley Rat.
Kinda like you thought it was A5, but it's actually 5.6. So weird.
Might do a bit on the Wings later.

I am still laughing!

It's always been A3 for me, kinda like your probably gonna walk away from it if you don't fu** up.

Great story!
