Does anyone have the info and Beta on the alternate descents off the top of El Cap?  I need some info on the hike across from Tamarack Flats or up from the Vallley floor via the Falls trail.  My girlfriend and a friend of hers want to hike to the top and meet me as I top out ( and I need them to help carry my things, haha).  I was thinking they could come in from Tamarack then we could either exit that way or do the east ledges together and shuttle back to the car.

Info and Ideas?

It's a good haul from Tamarack, but not too much el gain. Never done the Falls trail to EC summit, but it's rather steep comparatively. Look for the 90? right turn off the trail from the summit if you're headed back down the Falls. These are all regular hiking trails, so info will be available. If ya like gorgeous hiking consider the option from Old Big Oak Flat Road trailhead south of Tamarack. It's two miles more than Tam and goes through a bunch of less-trodden bear country, Cascade Creek, with amazing views up valley. Intersects with Tamarack trail after 4 miles or so. Watch out for wasps around Ribbon Meadow; I got stung just walking the trail.

Doing the EL descent will save time and mileage but be more involved. Not super leisurely like hiking off. Prolly wanna have climbing skills going that way, as there is 3rd class before and after the raps.

I'd probably hike out. Walking on flat ground is pretty decadent after a nice run up the Cap. It should be a snap any way you go with three people sharing the load.
Say no to limbers, excavators and retro-bolters. No matter how much he smiles.

Avoid the Falls trail hike. I've done the hike from EC to the Valley floor via the Falls trail & it's pretty grevious. I liked the hike from EC summit to Tamarack, thought it was Gentle & fun. Or as fun as hikin' ever gets..........

I hiked up to the summit of El Cap from Camp 4 via the Falls Trail and back and it was not a whole lot of fun. Well, really it's just the first 3 miles that are all switchbacks that are miserable (it's worse on the knees going down) cause that's where all the elevation gain is. Once you get to the top of the switchbacks it's a nice leisurely stroll. If you can go another way than via the Falls trail (although it is pretty) I would.

The ascent and descent of the Falls Trail is utter hell - done it twice.   Avoid it at all cost.

I have only hiked out from the summit of El Cap to Tamarack Flat once, and never again!  I heard it was "fairly level" - well, it's not.  The last couple miles are all uphill, and felt very tiring to me.  Plus it's EIGHT FRICKIN' MILES!

The East Ledges descent is a cakewalk by comparison.  Teach your girliefriend how to ride a pig, and you're good to go.  You will be down in half the time, or less.
