Long read, but I tried to keep it interesting.
I still need to add Tom Evans' photos later this weekend.
Enjoy,

GG,

what's this?

Quote
I had manufactured a 9" cam for this trip that would have to suffice

would have nabbed the image, but there is some scripting that prevents a right click copy for the image url

We call That, your basic Red X in a box, sir.

Super TR, Greg. Thanks....Mike's TR's are kin.You guys have ruined lesser TR's, for me, anyway.
Who am I kidding? I read ALL of them. Haha. Damn, but you DID put some effort into yours. I'll feel hard pressed to put up a good one(I still imagine a day where I will).
That was freakin' FABULOUS. AWESOME tr.
{hearty Applause}.......Well Done, Bro. It's the Tall Stone, huh?
Yowza.

Thanks, guys.
Re-living it while writing the TR is almost as fun as the climbing.

Munge:
I make guitars and have a CNC, so making a cam wasn't that difficult.
I launched into it after a being prodded by Mark Blanchard at the Montreal Guitar Show.
Finished it two weeks before we left.

I'm not the only luthier-climber-gearHomeBrewer. Blanchard made most of his rack (and the Silent Partner)
My guitar website is http://www.germanguitars.com
Mark's is http://www.blanchardguitars.com/

Nice deflection, Greg : )

Oy, I need a 6 steel string. I might have to settle for a Martin...but a guy can dream. Awesome designs at first glance. Maybe I should look away...

That Cam is RAD!!!

Thanks. I might be convinced to make other big cams for climbers if the price is right.
It wouldn't be an easy gig to make a profit with without some re-tooling, though.

I don't think Anyone is making Valley Giants right now... Am I wrong?

There could be a small market for them...

I couldn't stop laughing beside that poor cart while I was waiting for my wife to drive up to the curb.

Wow, what a great looking cam? How much are you going to sell these for?

I also heard that Tom was not making them anymore.

Fantastic TR by the way.

...How much are you going to sell these for? ...

I don't have plans to make any in hopes of finding a buyer.
Cutting metal makes a big mess with the oil you have to use to lubricate the bit. It takes several hours of machine time on my CNC to cut out the aluminum, and industry standard is to charge between $60-$90/hr. The materials cost is ~$50.
Making one for ~$200 is still just breaking even (considering that I could be setting up guitars during that time for more money than that), but charging more is beyond what the market would bear.
It's not a gig that can be profitable unless you have an efficient metal shop and a distribution scheme for actually selling them...
