The heat is off...what ya gonna do about it?
« on: November 02, 2009, 02:53:39 pm »
Thinking Winter walls? Sure, it is Winter... South facing bliss, yeaaaahhh.

Don't get me wrong, I'm no alpinist. I'll wait until a week ahead and go for it. With decent conditions, methinks another New Years run is afoot. Not sure exactly what or who, but Kia is always, always, always up for hardship, struggle and doubt.

What's on the radar, monkeys?

think it would be hard to ride a bike out from Roads end in Kings Canyon with a haulbag?

hrm...

going in would be spicy fun too if there is ice!

Skull mang, give a shout when you'll be around. I can't swing a shit load of time off til probably summer again, but if you blast around a weekend, I'll help ya schlep some loads.  I gotta get back on some SW base routes over the winter, which is not say I'm giving up Pinnacles season.

I have forced time off over Xmas and new years.  I'm thinking of maybe doing a second run up Mideast Crisis, or finally doing Tangerine Trip over the New Years week.

All previous plans of the sort have fallen through due to fixed schedules and random weather, so we'll see.

Meanwhile it's full on sewing season.  I'm halfway through making myself One-Night-Stand knock off, though slightly larger (26x50).  As usual it takes about 1 portaledge floor's worth of edge binding to get it dialed in, then you're done...  I got an A5 TNF ultralight fly for $30 with shipping that will fit it just perfectly.  I also cut out the hooks from my legit Trango Russian Aiders.  I'm gonna refit them and maybe sell them to finally recoup some of what I paid for them (too much...).

Aye, good of ya, munge. But you wouldn't be getting off that easy, hehe. Better bring booze. And puffy clothes. OOOHHH!

boy, i hate to say it, but aliens are going to be tougher and tougher to come by for at least awhile, me thinks. I feel for Nadia and their team, but my hybrids may need to be stored in a vault from now on, unless being used as bribery to get on a team. hahahaha

god, those are such the amazing design, aren't they?  marginal to solid transformative power.

So, I've known folks who have done recent ascents of the Steck Salathe with passive pro only. Has anyone done a Grave V or VI with only aliens?

As far as winter walling goes, I have a month off from just before xmas till later in Jan. Zion treated me real good for over a week in Feb. last year, and someone mentioned a nice little climb down there..... Hmmm, even got enough time for two, if I had a partner, for sure two would go. Hint, hint.

Bolts on the outside variation of the Narrows

; D

But I digress...Steak Salad isn't really a big wall, ey? The right route and it wouldn't be too bad. As someone said about the wide, technique is your pro. True, that.

I'd love to do a winter wall. I'm gonna start asking around for a partner. The next 2 months don't look so good for work, so I might as well get a wall in...

Munge,

If you're serious, and can swing a week of tomfoolery (168 hours portland to portland minimum), I'd love to try and take you up on it for a second lap on Mideast Crisis.  And if a week is a bit short, then something shorter but still well protected like WFLT would be way cool mid-winter too.  You'd just need to put up with a buffoon like me the whole time...

G, I don't know if I can swing a full wall week. Got some familial obligations, Pinnacles obligations, blah blah blah.

Really it just depends on weather.

But I can definitely help folks out carrying loads or beer, etc. on a few days in there and around events in the winter.  Keep my wall psyche going. Get a hike in... g'naw mean?  During the winter, the monkeys thin out so I know loads are more of a chore. But the Valley is at it's most beautiful in Winter, IMHO. Come on down if you can swing it and the weather holds.

(Sorry PTPP, you got too much stuff dude)

Sincerely,

The Real Buffoon Munge

Don't have any plans for the heart of winter but I'm gonna try to get out to Zion for the first time in March. It's so far away but I'm already stoked about it. I'm thinking Prodigal Son or Touchstone.

Totally. I'll be the first one bailing for some riding if it looks like trouble.

That would be silly to simulslog the Column. Be a hoot to meet up with some o' ya. I'm jus blowing smoke right now, have no idea what my holiday schedule looks like. Make hay while the sun shines, ya dig. Guy's gotta dream.

this is the time of year that I'm jealous of you guys in cali - the walls in squamish all face west, so there's less than 3 hours of sun even on the odd day it does shine.  Not much chance for anything but easy stuff in a push.

Less chance of terminal heatstroke here in mid summer, tho  :)

YAD, How are the temps? Why not strap on the head torch and power on? (Aside from the impending kid.)

it's supposed to snow next week, and it's been raining for weeks.

squamish walls don't see a lot of traffic, so off-season stuff involves a lot of wet moss.   I still try to get out aiding in the winter, but don't get the t-shirt weather the valley sees in winter sometimes.

Some of the harder stuff is better in winter - not much is really dry, but pitches with nothing but hooks involve less gardening  :)

For Yos, what kind of degree sleeping bag are you using with your bivi sacks in winter?

I've got a summer bag that with my bivi sack was perfect for summer.  But my old 20 degree is too long and too old to be effective anymore, me thinks.

thoughts?

munge, my old Mountain HW 4th Dimension is still kicking after eight years. Big, heavy and warm. I think a good m.o. is to bolster a bag with some puffy clothes like MH Compressor pants and a puffy jacket like that Pattagucci DAS parka.

The nights I've spent out were mild compared to some of the days. Even in the sun, that devil wind can be pretty biting. And runoff--esp during those nice windows we shoot for. That shee can be pretty brutal and impossible to avoid.

Fun, hehe...?
