Yeah I did 2 seasons of mountaineering at Mt Cook National Park a while ago. Great atmosphere and not much of a crowd. Also fairly easy to meet up with other climbers at the camp ground as well. So I didn't end up doing any solo stuff at all... which is probably a good thing!

In relation to big walls I think there maybe be some biggies in the Darran Mountains. But not sure if it is just long free routes. Hopefully a kiwi will chip in.

The New Zealand Alpine Club is you best source of info. http://alpineclub.org.nz/

I lived in Twizel/Mt Cook (up until about 8 years ago and my wife and I moved to Denver.  Twizel is like Canmore to Banff, and Mt  Cook is like Chamonix but without the easy access!

What do you want to know? Lay out some specific questions so that I can give you the information you want?

Also, New zeland is spelt New Zealand.

Cheers
