If you go into the stores that carry iron, LAs all sizes and Angles all sizes are on sale.

it gets worse...

the REI in Fremont, CA does NOT have ANY camming devices, NO stoppers, and barely any carabiners.

sad state of affairs

Betcha they've got the LATEST sportshirts......Our REI has crampons but no axes. What is with THAT?
No pins, but they have hammers. Weird stocking strategy, I'm thinkin'.
When did they put a REI in Fremont? When I lived out there, the San Carlos store was brand new.

yep, latest clothing fo shua.

been a few years. it has a rock pinnacles indoors too. can't understand it, other than to say that the local climbing gym is across the street, but they don't really sell gear either.

BD hammer is on sale too at REI Saratoga for like 79 bucks or sumthin, almost bought a spare but I'm holding out for the Moses stuff (cupertino store moved to Saratoga store, jfyi)

Yeah, get some angles that have been marked down what, 2 cents? The bulk of their Iron dissapeared about a month ago, I'm pretty sure they're in the process of phasing out any aid gear.  My guess is that they'll eventually dump the majority of their climbing gear with the exception of the following: bd cams, hexes, nuts; 40 to 50 different styles of quickdraws, some glacier related stuff (for all those glacier hikers that love the place) metolius nut tools, rappelling gloves, crashpads and plastic holds, a couple ropes and of course a good selection of commercially made slackline kits...yeah, everything you'd ever need to film an SUV commercial in the desert. I can just see someone in the corporate boardroom:

Circa late 2009
Drone number 1:"Susan, hand me those figures for climbing equipment sales...hmm, those rock pegs aren't selling very well. Any thoughts on this?"

Drone number 2: "I was at (insert name of climbing gym) and I asked one of the best climbers there how many they had bought this year, seems he didn't even know what one was. I asked one of their staff and according to him, they've been replaced by bolts like, 40 years ago. Apparently they weren't good for the environment."

D1: "Not good for the environment! We need to send out flyers to all of our 1.2 million "members" and let them know to stop using them...what did those climbers say we should sell?"

D2: "Ma'am, from what I remember, we need more chalk bags in our inventory.  Big ones.  Seems that climbers want really expensive carabiners and cool climbing clothes."

D1: "Well, it's about time.  the margins on those other things were really low.  How were we supposed to keep selling climbing gear when it wasn't very profitable? On to new business: D3, how are our membership sales in the new store in Topeka KS?"

...and so it goes on.

They don't want our business and haven't for a long while.

the sale price ends in 3, which I think is their discontinue pricing method.

the iron I saw was marked down from retail, not from a misquoted price on the website. you'll note

http://www.acmeclimbing.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=202

has the 1.25 at 12.95

so that's my 2 cents

good catch munge...I guess I was dreaming a little to think that angles were still less than 10 bucks for any size.

you had me going there for a minute. I didn't see the "retail" price REI had posted online. I ended up picking up a few that I need to convert to sawed offs. Oh man that reminds me. I need to tell tmoses I'll be down his way Thursday, and hopefully can drop off a few things to be prettied up.

REI has been down playing their climbing wares in store for years.  Well HARDwares at least.  As posted above the margins aren't as good and it doesn't move nearly as well.

Re Fremont Store:  The climbing wall was put in before the gym opened across the street.  They used to stock a whole lot more in the climbing department.  I was there in September and it was absolutely pitiful.

Munge:  You coming down?  You still got my number?  I am moving houses across town so I'll be busy but I can spare a little time for ya.  Keep holding for the hammer.  I'll make it happen.

The one here in Fort Collins, CO - about 45 minutes from Rock Mountain National Park - doesn't even sell ice-tools or screws! Pitons? What's a piton? The shop's "climbing expert" is an extremely overweight middle age man??? And they no longer carry USGS Quads! That place sucks. It has a climbing wall covered in about an inch of dust because they haven't used it in a decade.
