Yosemite Falls Route
« on: March 05, 2010, 02:48:55 pm »
The secret euro route thread got me thinking about another route that is some what disregarded and never mentioned.

When I started to climb I was tutored by a climber from the 70's who knew trad climbing and big walls.  He mentored me in both and set me on a path that has been amazing.
He one day tells me on an approach that he had done the first ascent of the falls route directly up the falls.  I ask how did you do that with the water coming off the top.  No snow made for a dry falls one year he tells me.  I ask who he did the route with and he tells me that he did it with Rick Sylvester.  Sounds cool and not much else was said.  I would ask him about it on ocassion after looking in the guide and not seeing the route shown with the exception of a small note on the falls page where it says Sylvester Route with an arrow pointing up, and he would just kinda say yeah it was hot and the rock was smooth.

Does anyone else have any info on what that route was all about?  I'm not interested in climbing it, but it would be good to know the story if it can be told.  Took a ton of balls to do that considering that if it rained in the high country you were going to be drowned and pummeled to death by falling debris from the creek.

If you search the american alpine journal there is an article.  Reign in Blood goes up the path of the falls too.  World of Pain is pretty much in the falls too.  I bet all the bolts and rivets just suck!
