How many new portaledges are sold each year?
« on: August 03, 2010, 03:18:05 pm »
I was discussing with a friend my need/want of a new ledge.  That started us talking about how many ledges are sold each year. I said it must be quite a few given the big guys like Black Diamond and Metolius are involved and Fish seems to do fine as well.  He seemed to think it was a very small market and they all must be losing money on the deal.

Anyone know out there about how many ledges get sold each year? I already know the number sold is higher than the number used but that's another story.

Very interesting question.  I seriously doubt they are losing money, even if volumes are modestly low.  If you price out the raw materials, even at retail prices, a Cliff Cabana is about $200 in raw bits (ledge only, fly is a different story).  Being that they are not paying retail for fabric, and given that these things are made in China (ugh) you can bet they easily have a good ~65% gross margin.

Retail price estimates
3 yards bed fabric:  ~$30
80' webbing:  ~$40
Corners:  ~$40  (in bulk, going by emachineshop.com pricing)
Tubing: ~$40
Misc.: $20 (ballistics cloth, plastic buckles, cam buckles, etc)
Total:  $170

I'm on the last bits of building myself a home made Cabana sized ledge, and mostly it's sewing time.  I would be a lot faster the second time around now that I have a pattern worked out (i.e. too late).

I'm sure Metolius, BD and Fish sell a bunch of these every year. They would have too, otherwise why would they go to the trouble, R and D, etc and manufacturing setup and cost. Less than a 500 but more than a 100? Fish would probably have a much smaller production run. It would be interesting for sure.

Another good question would be, how many portaledges purchased actually get on a wall.

zactly.  my fish has only been on one attempt. We used gomz's TNF with exped fly on LF.  Next wall, absolute requirement that the Fishy goes with. Gotta get my money's worth. Now just gotta figure out some time off in between classes and life.

Another question is how many flys EVER get deployed?  My ledges have gone up 3 routes, zero deployments.  I loaned one out to a bud who went up a couple walls, and the one time it did dump on him he had already given up carrying it.

So I own 4 flys, only one of which has ever been deployed, and that was by the previous owner.

How about pins?  How many pins are bought by folks "just in case" and never get placed?  I'm guessing that number is up over 90% these days.  I've placed maybe a half dozen hammered placements, and own about 30 pins.  I have about 40 heads, and have yet to place a single one.

I long since realized that most wall gear never sees rock, or even then usually only once, and have gone the ebay route for lots of stuff.

That fly is Golden when you need it, Garbonzo.
2 El Cap storms, 1 on Angel Wings. Would've died of exposure.
Watched 13 monkeys get rescued in '94 on El Cap, in a 2 day storm. we were hungry, but dry.
I think you're right about most of the gear, though.I took 30 pins to The Perch, used 12. Dead weight, mostly.
Arrrggh.

No disagreement skully, golden when needed.  At the same time on multiple occasions, it gets left on the ground in favor of the bivy sack just due to weight and expected fair weather.

Perhaps we need a "Take a pin, leave a pin" system for el cap...

the whole concept of bringing all the possible gear you might need is like having a partner on a wall. It helps ensure you don't bail for not having enough in your own 'sack'

You know, Munge, that's what I kept telling myself on the Redfish Creek Trail.(to the Perch)
Forewarned is forearmed, too. Or some such.
Back on topic, I like that more folks buy ledges than will ever use them. Like my A5 single.....150 bucks on fleabay(with a rainfly).
Probably been used once or twice, that's ALL! Well, before me, anyway....... Gotta love it.

Get off the Trade Routes!  Where's the adventure climbing a route that sees a bunch of ascents every season?  Go climb something obscure, and you will place pins, and you'll place heads.  Where's the fun in "clip and climb"?

Or just sour someone else's ascent by joining up on their clean attempt, and proceeding to nail the crap out of the route (oh, and hide whiskey from them too).

One less thanks to me!  Snapped my Metolius double putting it away this spring (right at the joint, the metal had weakened where it necks down to the male insert).  Had to bail, fix ropes, borrow a buddy's BD, which are heavy as shit!
Sent it back to Metolius and got it back good as new within 3 weeks.  They rule.

I'd like to laugh at this, but I think I've heard the story. :)

Hehehe. Ouch, babe.

I smell a new partners thread...
