Disco Inferno~ Zion
« on: September 03, 2010, 12:49:21 am »
So I plan on putting in an attempt on disco in a couple weeks and was wondering if anyone had any info/beta on the messed up bat holes.  If not... would it be okay to take a bolt kit and use it.  All that I have read is the inevitable.  There will be bolts eventually or the pounding of angles.  Opinions of the topic are welcome; however, I would like to know what should be there and/or what is there already.  I have not read any trip reports on the route younger than 3 years.

I think John Middendorf did the FA. You should PM him through this site,  deuce4 is his username.

I don't know if he could help. I was reading Ammon Mc Neely's trip report and it looks as though the bat holes are close to useless, considering one blew on him.  That was in 2007.  John did the FA in 1995.  The guide book even says that Calder Stratford(Mittendorf's accomplice) "encourages future parties to fill in the BAT hook holes with bolts".

I guess the question is,  if I get there and there are not bolts, should I place bolts for future parties?  I am not the biggest fan of bolts or rivets, but I know they have their place. I would just like to know if I can do my part or leave it alone.  I thought that allowing the masses to tell me what they think would be the best way.

Disco is a great route, the holes are crap though. Calder has told more then one person to fill them so man if you are willing do it. I just used a clip stick, all but 2 of  the holes are usable (they are complete scary crap though). So if you are willing to do the time do it! Please use bolts not pins unless you glue in the angles. They seem to loosen and if not placed properly they can be jank. If you use bolts, try using a 5 piece bolt like a RAWL they seem to work the best IMO in the sandstone.  Right on man have fun great route! The birth canal is one of the coolest pitches! (HEHE) See ya have fun up there
